![]() We’re running out of time.” And I was like, “What about that OC idea? So we just sort of brainstormed more places it could go and shot it really fast. But yeah, it was one of those weeks where we were like, “S**t, we need to do a short. There’s even a version of it that we started shooting but never finished with me and Jorma and our friend Chester that gets up to like the third beat, and then we just never finished shooting it, because we got busy. Samberg: Yeah, it was actually an idea I had before we got hired at SNL. It’s funny no matter what, but it’s really funny if you saw The O.C. Samberg: Oh yeah, same! IGN: Is that something you had sitting in your pocket? I thought it was so funny, but it was so specific. IGN: I have to ask about “Dear Sister.” I’m a fan of The OC. So I think that’s the answer to that one is why “Shy Ronnie 2” ended up on there. ![]() We’ve had problems with a few other songs where there’s been sample clearances and stuff. I think when we make these songs you use beats from outside producers and stuff and sometimes their willingness to collaborate with steps beyond the show can hang it up. Why is that? Samberg: Oh yeah! I’m not sure what’s going to happen with that. IGN: I feel like at some point, even if it was a drunken conversation, someone must have been like, ‘Hey, the Dick in a Box guys… We could do a movie about that!’ Samberg: I’m sure it’s happened somewhere! IGN: A prison movie perhaps, connecting “Dick in a Box” to “Mother Lover.” Samberg: Yeah, it’s about their time on the inside! IGN: You did two “Shy Ronnie” songs, but only the second got onto one of your albums. At a certain point, we stopped trying to predict what was going to happen and just tried to make each other laugh. ![]() There were ones that we thought were going to be bigger that weren’t, and ones that we thought were a lost cause that ended up way bigger. ![]() Did you ever see that coming or was it usually a surprise? Samberg: Well at a certain point, it became clear that the songs always had a better shot, just because it’s more conducive to that, but you never know. IGN: You made 101 of these videos, but then you’d have particular ones like “I’m on a Boat,” “Dick in a Box,” or “Jack Sparrow” that would really explode into pop culture. I agree with you, it could have been a real song very easily, if the lyrics hadn’t been so straightforwardly stupid. Yeah, in the case of a song like “I’m on a Boat,” that beat is just a monster. High production value applied to the stupidest idea imaginable always makes us laugh. But yeah, definitely, we like to try and make things feel as close to what we’re making fun of, or having fun with, as possible. Has that always been an important aspect for you guys when you’re putting these things together? Samberg: Well thanks, first off. Samberg: That’s awesome! IGN: One thing people bring up about your songs is they’re very funny, but they also have really great beats and you could see someone changing the lyrics and if it weren’t comedic, it would just be a really good beat for a song. IGN: When “I’m on a Boat” came out, I think we used to play it at our office two or three times a day. Working with really established and admirable talent has always been a big part of why they’re fun. But you know, all the ones with Timberlake of course and the ones from our records – “I’m on a Boat,” and things with people we admire. I liked the one we did with Amy Adams, “Hero Song,” where Jason Sudeikis hits me like 95 times in a row. I don’t know, I always loved "Roy Rules", because it was a prank I played on my actual brother-in-law. IGN: I know it’s always difficult to answer a question like this, but do you have a favorite among the Digital Shorts? Samberg: Gosh, I really, really still do like a lot of them. I mean, it’s definitely something I always hoped would happen, so yeah, fingers crossed. ![]() Andy Samberg: Oh, thank you! IGN: Has there been talk of doing a DVD collection of those? Samberg: No official talks. IGN TV: So I have to tell you, I’m a huge fan of the Digital Shorts. ![]()
